Netball across the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts is run by a single organisation and played at two main venues in Rangiora. For families and new players, the tricky part is usually working out which grade plays where and when — and where to find the current draw.

This guide explains the centre that runs the game locally, the venues it uses, the grades and their playing times, how to register, and where to check fixtures and results. Every detail below is drawn from the centre’s official information for the 2026 season.

The North Canterbury Netball Centre

The North Canterbury Netball Centre (often shortened to NCNC) is the affiliated body that organises club netball, junior programmes and representative teams across North Canterbury. It is based at Church Street, Rangiora, and its stated purpose is “to foster, develop and promote netball by providing enjoyment and recreation for all participants.”

Around 20 registered clubs and schools play in the centre’s winter competition, junior grades and player-development programmes. Like every regional association, it operates under Netball New Zealand, the sport’s national governing body, and delivers Netball NZ’s junior framework at grassroots level. Where netball is played

North Canterbury netball is played at two locations a short distance apart in Rangiora. Knowing which grade uses which venue removes most of the first-season confusion.

MainPower Stadium (indoor)

MainPower Stadium on Coldstream Road is the centre’s indoor home. It hosts the secondary school and senior Saturday grades, the semi-finals and finals of the junior competition, and the midweek social indoor league. Because it is under cover, MainPower Stadium is where play continues when winter weather makes the outdoor courts unusable.

Dudley Park (outdoor)

Dudley Park, on Church Street, is the outdoor netball hub, with courts used mainly for the junior Saturday grades through the winter season. The Coldstream Builders Pavilion at Dudley Park also hosts grade forums and administration for the centre. On a busy Saturday morning the outdoor courts run several grades side by side.

Grades and age groups

North Canterbury caters for players from about five years old right through to open adult grades. The pathway is built around Netball NZ’s futureFERNS junior programme for younger children and moves into full seven-a-side netball as players get older.

futureFERNS juniors (Years 1–8)

futureFERNS is Netball New Zealand’s modified junior delivery framework. It uses smaller teams, lower hoops for the youngest players, rotating positions and a strong emphasis on fair play and enjoyment rather than the score. In North Canterbury it is delivered in age bands — Years 1–2, Years 3–4 and Years 5–6 — so children learn foundation skills such as passing, footwork and shooting in an age-appropriate way before moving to the full game.

By Years 7 and 8, players compete in seven-a-side netball on Saturdays at Dudley Park, with matches scheduled between roughly 9.00am and 3.00pm. In 2026 this grade opens on Saturday 2 May and runs to the final round on 15 August, with semi-finals on 22 August and finals on 29 August at MainPower Stadium. There is no play on King’s Birthday weekend or during the July school-holiday break.

Secondary school and senior grades

Secondary school and adult players — from social teams through to senior competition — play on Saturdays at MainPower Stadium, with games spread across the day between about 8.30am and 5.00pm. This is standard seven-a-side netball played to the national rules. Representative and development pathways

Alongside the weekly club competition, the centre runs player-development programmes and representative teams at Under-14, Under-16, Under-18 and open levels. The open representative grade is for female players aged 18 or older as at 1 January of the playing year who are financial members of an NCNC club (or an affiliated centre such as Hurunui or Kaikoura) and who have played a minimum number of grading games. Representative fixtures in 2026 include a field-day tournament, the Lindsay Cup against neighbouring Selwyn at MainPower Stadium, and senior tournament play. These programmes are the local rung of the pathway that, at its peak, feeds the Mainland region and beyond.

How to join and register

You do not register with the centre directly — you join through one of its member clubs or schools, and the club enters you into the correct grade. The steps are straightforward:

• Choose a club or school from the centre’s clubs-and-schools list; most are based in and around Rangiora, Kaiapoi and the surrounding Waimakariri and Hurunui towns.
• Complete the club’s registration before the season, paying both the club subscription and the centre membership fee.
• Download My Netball Manager, the official app, so you can see your team, draw and game-day details on your phone.
• New to netball? Ask about the “Have a Go @ Netball” introductory sessions and the futureFERNS junior grades, both designed for first-timers.

Registration opens ahead of the winter season, which broadly runs from early May to late August. If you are unsure which grade suits your child’s school year, the centre office is the quickest way to check.

Finding the current draw and results

Draws in North Canterbury are published online rather than printed, and they can change week to week with weather and byes. There are two reliable places to look:

• The centre website, ncnc.org.nz — each grade (for example the Saturday grade draw and the Year 5–6 or Year 7–8 draws) has its own page with the latest fixtures, courts and times.
• The My Netball Manager app — once your team is registered, the app shows your personal draw, results and any cancellations.

Social and summer netball

North Canterbury netball is not only a winter, Saturday sport. The centre also runs midweek and off-season options for players who want a more relaxed game.

The Mike Greer Homes Social Indoor League is played on Thursday evenings at MainPower Stadium, with women’s and mixed grades. It is open to players in Year 9 and above, teams supply their own bibs and a scorer, and games run in evening timeslots from around 6.10pm. Entry in recent seasons has been $800 per team, with places limited and allocated first-come, first-served. A separate Summer Twilight tournament brings social teams together for a round-robin competition outside the main winter season.

These leagues are a good entry point for adults returning to the game or for workmates wanting a casual team, without the commitment of the full club season.
